Of all the scripture in the Bible, Psalm 23 is probably the most well known and the most loved. More plaques and coffee cups have been emblazoned with these beautiful words than probably any other passage of the bible. Like many beautiful things we are well familiar with, it is often easy to read over the words or to say them without really understanding them or pondering their meaning.
In this little book, former evangelical pastor, now Catholic convert, Michael Faber, uses his seminary training, preaching background, and the riches of the Catholic Church Fathers to explore the depths of spiritual riches contained in this little but well-known psalm.
Join Michael Faber, as he explores, what life in the Good Shepherd’s Flock can mean through the wonderful words of David’s Psalm 23.

"For the believer who wants to learn more about the meaning behind the words, Michael Faber digs deep and often provides the original language which gives the reader a truer understanding of the words written by the shepherd of old who tended his flock by day and wrote praises to God at night. We come to understand that the LORD is our shepherd, who aids and protects us in our daily lives. Using this analogy throughout, Faber helps us decipher and understand each phrase and how the words impact our lives. Certainly a helpful guide to all who love the Psalms and are curious how it came to be a favorite of so many Christians."

  • Faber’s “Life in the Good Shepard Flock” has its merits and limitations. A book written for Bible readers, aware of the stories, it can provide great material to dive deeply into a theological discussion. There are even questions at the end of each chapter to foster discussion. Faber quotes many passages, provides theological insight, and connects to our life today. Sadly it fails to provide space for seekers, or newer believers to feel comfortable with the material.

I gave it a three because, as a writer who has a Masters of Divinity I found his methodology confusing and theology too ridged. Faber didn’t talk enough about authorship and historical context failing to bring the Psalm alive. At times Faber was pastoral, at times he was academic without any pattern or method to when he was either. For me, his pastoral stories failed to make the points he was trying to make. His strict black and white theology, which subtly implied that you’re in the faithful or outside and not to be associated with, carried with it a limited view of God’s grace (and the world). This promotes fear and ultimately shame and it is theologically incorrect. God is loving, sending his son to die for us while we were still sinners, and Jesus ate with sinners. If the book hadn’t done this I would have given it a better rating, but I can’t abide shame being used, as if it’s God’s weapon. In fairness, I don’t think he’s aware he does this. I think it’s leftover from his strict Baptist background (not all Baptists are this ridged). Also, I am ultra-sensitive to any kind of shaming so you may not notice it.

In conclusion, while I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone who’s ever been wounded by the church (or experienced depression) a self-aware, confident, and educated reader or reading group might get a lot out of discussing it. He has insightful things to say but you got to be able to weed through it. It's not an easy read but maybe that's a good thing.
  • Michael Faber writes books because he a man passionate about bringing people closer to our Lord . In his latest book " Life in the Good Shepherds Flock" He takes a Bible passage that is likely recognized by all ( even non-believers) but fully understood by very few, and explains it to us in a way that we can understand that God is there to help us in our time of need even if we chose a path that is detrimental to our soul and salvation. The real life examples of Michael and his friends and acquaintances are inspiring testimonials that God will guide us through our darkest moments if we place our faith in him.
I have never been much of a reader but I started reading "Life in the Good Shepherds Flock" and could not put it down, I read it in one day. I enjoyed Michael's presentation of the 23rd Psalms in a way that gave me a better understanding of a passage that I had always thought of more as just a comforting poetic scripture verse .
I recommend this little book to all .

  • I really enjoyed reading the book. The beginning of the book defines how Jesus is our shepherd. Then the author also sets examples how God intervenes to make things happen. I agree with the author that a lot people have a hard time hearing the words of God. There's also a bit of humor in this book. Overall, I highly recommend this book to improve your relationship with Jesus.
  • Most of us are very familiar with Psalm 23. In fact we have heard and said it many times at church or during personal reflection. This book provides an incredible everyday portrait of what this beautiful Psalm means to all of us in today’s modern world. It tackles many of the troubling aspects of our world and brings Gods ultimate wisdom and plan for us.
